Lough Ree

Lough Ree is the second largest lake on the River Shannon after Lough Derg and is known as the Lake of Kings. This lake is over 18 miles long and is a designated conservation area. It is surrounded by castles and is studded with small islands all withit's own tale to tell. Lough Ree is a must see for those visiting Ireland's HIdden Heartlands thanks to it's stunning scenery, serenity and legends.

The Lough Ree Monster
Lough Ree is believed to be home to a credible lough monster, similar to Lough Ness in Scotland. The story goes that on May 28, 1960 three priests out fishing noticed an unusal creature in the water. The priests noted teh creatures size and features and their story later appeared in local papers and later on the BBC. There have been other sightings and stories of movement and knocks against boats and cruisers on the lake.

The picturesque town of Athlone that sits on the River Shannon is nearby. Athlone is a vibrant hub of culture, art and heritage. From Athlone boat tours offers visitors to explore the River Shannon and Lough Ree from the water. There is an excellent range of accomodation options and outstanding restaraunts in Athlone.

Glasson village is charming and well worth a visit, just a short 3km from the nearest point at Lough Ree offering visitors delisicous dining options and fabulous accomodation. 

Portlick Millennium Forest is a wonderful walk that explores the wooded glades and farmlands of Portlick and the Whinning peninsula of Lough Ree.  The trail is 5km with shorter alternatives.
