From Mullingar town, you can enjoy 23km of tranquil, peaceful paddling, by canoe, kayak or stand-up paddleboard along the Royal Canal. Known for its unique biodiversity and historical stone bridges and locks, the Royal Canal is steeped in beauty, a haven from the hustle and bustle of nearby towns. A range of watersports can be sampled from the Mullingar Blueway Activity Zone, where you can hire the equipment and explore the water yourself or avail of expert advice and guidance from a local guide.

Mullingar town offers lots of accommodation and great food options, including cafes, restaurants and live music, with must see attractions nearby such as Belvedere House, Gardens and Park and the Hill of Uisneach. Along the Blueway there are lots of picnic spots for you to soak in your surroundings, or stop for a hearty pub lunch at Mary Lynch’s on the canal banks.

The Blueway is part of the Royal Canal Greenway, an off-road cycling trail along the canal banks, from the River Shannon in Clondra, County Longford all the way towards Dublin city.
